Laurence Yep, the author of “Dragonwings” and many other books, has been writing for many years. He was born in San Francisco, California on June 14th of 1948. Yep actually grew up in Chinatown in San Francisco, just like the one in the story.
Many of Yep’s books were a series on one family, such as Dragonwings which is based on the “Lee” family. Laurence’s purpose for this novel is to entertain the reader. His book “Dragonwings” a historical fiction book based on the time of the early 1900’s. Also this story and some of the others he has written personally connects to his life in the past, maybe with his father and mother, or the bond between the company and Moonshadow. Yep might have also tried to connect to the readers through the story by the way Moonshadow was bullied, and later how he stood up for himself and finally became a man. But overall this novel is an entertaining historical fiction story. The book is also a way to show how brutal life in a San Francisco Chinatown for a small tang boy, that is in the 1900’s when the when the Americans would hire Chinese men to do their dirty work.
When Laurence Yep was writing this novel, the process he made from Moonshadow playing with kites as a young boy to Windrider flying dragonwings on the farm hill was very smooth flowing, but was never boring and keeps your attention. Yep also took Moonshadow from his home in China to the farm in Oakland in a way for most readers to where they can easily understand it but enjoy just as much, but probably a lot more.
Laurence Yep has been very successful in his writing career and has actually won several awards. Every award he has won like the “Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal” has been in the category of young adult books, due to the style of his writings. Yep has won the Newberry Award for this particular book.
