Character - collective distinguishing qualities or characteristics
Main Character(s): The story is being told from the perspective of moon Shadow. As he embarks on an epic journey through the Western United States, he encounters many people, including his father, Windrider, his “Uncle” Bright Star, his uncle’s friend White Deer, his friend Lefty, a demon named Jack, Ms. Whitlaw, Her niece Robin and his uncle’s son Black Dog.
Moon Shadow is a very round character. He is also the main character. He is a young boy (ages from 8-12 years old) and is very curious. The book is told from his point of view, so you understand more of what happened to him instead of what happened to the others. I really liked this book because I could put myself in it. I could picture just what he looked like - a Chinese boy with black hair, skinny and always happy.
Windrider is Moon Shadow’s dad. Before Moon Shadow got to the United States, we did not know who he was. He is another main character, like his son. He is not as round, though. The only thing I know about him is that he is tall, a little crazy and loves flying. He is a minor dynamic person because in the beginning of the play, he had a dream; in the end, he pursued his dream and built Dragonwings. He became very angry when Moon Shadow wrote the letter to the Wright Brothers, thinking that Moon Shadow spilled the beans about his secret.
Uncle Bright Star is the company boss. He is a big man and has lots of feelings but does not like to show them. He gives the monkey carved out of wood to Moon Shadow. He stood up to Black Dog for Moon Shadow and he helped Windrider achieve his flying dream in the end of the book. He is a good, protective person who looked after everyone.
White Deer is considered the “mom of the company” in the story. He cooks all the meals and cares for everybody. He gives Moon Shadow advice.
Lefty is sort of like a son. He is called Lefty because he had a gambling problem and cut off his left hand so he would no longer be able to roll the dice. He never really did anything kind, but I got the feeling that he was a good person.
Jack is a person whom the Tangs call demon. Jack first bullies Moon Shadow when he comes to the town. He and his group throw rocks at him. A couple of weeks lantern they came back at him and he punched Jack in the nose and earned the gang’s respect.
Robin is a girl who Moon Shadow meets in the city Robin and Moon Shadow c-became good friends throughout the story. She helps Moon Shadow overcome his fears and learn the language and culture of the United States.
Ms. Whitlaw is like a mom. When Moon Shadow and his dad came to town, she was the first to greet them. Ms. Whitlaw gave him cookies and milk. She cares for everyone, especially Moon Shadow and Robin. She even brings beer to the party. She stands up for Moon Shadow and Windrider when the army took them away. She is very kind.
