Laurence Michael Yep was born in 1948 in Chinatown, San Francisco. Son of Yep Grim Lew who owned a Grocery, named “La Conquista.” Which Yep and family lived above just as Moon Shadow lived above the laundry store. Oddly enough, Yep was named by his older brother, Thomas, who for the rest of his life studied about a saint. Although he was born in Chinatown, Yep lived outside of Chinatown where people that were not Chinese-Americans bullied Yep, which is one of the reasons that he wrote “Dragon Wings”. He wrote it to explain his views on Chinese-Americans and how Americans were racist and judged him. It is not that much different than today when we see an Oriental person and we say “You’re smart because you are Chinese” which is mean because we believe that you can’t be smart and athletic. So we say “You can’t be good at sports. However we have people like You Ming and Y.E Yang
who actually beat Tiger Woods to win the U.S Open. Anyways, he also wrote it to share some of his Chinese culture, so he thought it would be cool to say that in one book. When Laurence wrote “Dragonwings” he won two awards. He won “The Newberry Award” in 1976; the most recent award he received would be the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal.
Yep studied to be a writer at the University of California-Santa Cruz, and State University of New York. He writes historical fiction, speculative fiction, and autobiography.
Laurence wrote this book in a very classic style. First, he researched all of his information, for example the Earthquake of 1905. Second, he obviously wrote the book and got it published by HarperCollins Publishers Inc.
